I know I’m being Captain Obvious here, but I had to state it for the record… Resolutions Suck

So, that being the case, this week on the Surrounded by Idiots Radio Podcast, Lexi and I talk about “Why” resolutions suck and what to do instead for immediate results.

First off, I wanted to give out a little Millennial Tip of the Week based on a “situation” I personally went through this week.

Then, Lexi and I dove right in to why only 8% of resolutions ever pan out and how, just by making a few changes to how you word and approach a resolution, you can drastically increase your chances of seeing some serious progress in attaining your goal.

I first wanted to throw out the most popular New Year’s Resolutions, just so we could all be on the same page.  This list is from Nielsen (a reputable ratings service)

  1. Stay fit and healthy

  2. Lose weight

  3. Enjoy life to the fullest

  4. Spend less, save more

  5. Spend more time with family and friends

  6. Get organized

  7. Learn something new

  8. Travel more

  9. Read more

Then, Lexi and I started tearing these apart for being terrible goals and ineffective motivators to getting anything done…here’s why…

These statements are based on OUTCOME and are way too GENERAL …there are no concrete action steps within those resolutions statements.

So, instead of going with one of these resolutions, or a basic or general resolution you have settled on, you should…

Develop a PLAN OF ACTION that focuses on step by step GROWTH that helps you to learn and become more resilient in your climb up the mountain of success.

That being said, we then talk about the 5 steps needed for a successful Action Plan.  Following these steps will bring you immediate results.

  1. Brainstorm your growth ideas

  2. Ask yourself “why” you want to do it

  3. Ask yourself “how” you are going to it

  4. Take the first step of the “how” and create an action plan…the focus should be on the completion of the first step…nothing more

  5. Once that works itself out, then re-assess where you’re at and set up your next action plan

To finish things off, I asked Lexi to pick a couple of the crappy resolutions and walked her through using the 5 steps to make it a powerful life changing event.

We hope you enjoy the show and, if you have any questions or comments or suggestions, you know where to find me…Peace!
